Spend

Sad shoppers spend 4 times as much money.

Going on a spending spree while you’re feeling down could do serious damage to your finances, according to a recent study by researchers at Harvard, Carnegie Mellon, Stanford, and the University of Pittsburgh. Study participants who watched a “sad” movie clip were later willing to spend four times more money on a sporty-looking water bottle than those who watched an emotionally neutral nature video. Feelings of sadness, the study authors hypothesized, cause us to become more self-centered and devalue our possessions, then overspend to compensate for that feeling of loss. “If you feel diminished in a material sense, you may want to increase your sense of self by purchasing something,” says James Gross, Director of Stanford’s Psychophysiology lab. So do yourself a favor the next time you’re having a rough day: Rent a comedy.
