John Ginnetti makes a treat with a few tricks.

The Great Pumpkin is a toddy-style drink that’s great on an fall night. I love the autumnal flavor of pumpkin, but it’s hard to put in a cocktail without making the drink taste like pumpkin pie. Thankfully, pumpkin butter tastes similar, but it’s not as sweet. I like to garnish the cocktail with a cape gooseberry. It looks just like a Chinese lantern. John Ginnetti is the owner of 116 Crown in New Haven, Connecticut.

4 ounces hot water

2 ounces Flor de Cana rum

½ teaspoon pumpkin butter

1 cape gooseberry

Stir water, rum, and pumpkin butter together in a mug. Garnish with gooseberry.
