A classic spa offers a garden-variety treatment.

Call it a desire to stay close to their roots. Open since 1940, Rancho La Puerta in Tecate, Mexico—about 50 miles from San Diego—calls itself the world’s first destination spa. And in more than 60 years, its signature herbal wrap hasn’t changed a bit.

Here’s how the treatment works: Every morning, staffers pick a new herb from the spa’s six-acre organic garden. The spread includes California sagebrush (relaxes sore muscles), rosemary (rejuvenates tired nerves), eucalyptus (cleans infections), powis castle (cures headaches), and white sage (brightens mood).

Staffers then boil the herbs with linens that they wrap around your limbs. A special blanket seals in heat, while a cold compress gently draped across your forehead all but guarantees you’ll snooze at some point during the 30-minute session.

Once you’ve regained consciousness, take a stroll across more than 3,000 acres of farmland, meadow, and gardens. Just try to avoid stepping on the next day’s treatments. $45
