The median number of lifetime tweets per user is 1 on Twitter.
Why the silence? Researchers at Harvard Business School say Twitter isn’t a service that everyone instantly loves. Many newbie Tweeters sign up, try it out, then rarely or never return. So where does all the hype come from? The Twitter-obsessive minority—Ashton Kutcher and John Mayer among them—generates 90 percent of the content, while the typical user contributes very rarely. “Twitter is a broadcast medium rather than an intimate conversation with friends,” says study co-author Bill Heil. “It looks like a few people are creating content for a few people.”
