Find the best hotels, restaurants, and entertainment in these cities: The best Hotels, Restaurants, Shopping, Art, Cultural Attractions, and just plain Fun Stuff to do and see in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Hotels: Indianapolis Enjoy afternoon tea with finger sandwiches at the Canterbury Hotel, a historic landmark built in 1928. Get a birds-eye view of the city at the Residence Inn Indianapolis Downtown. Sleep on the grounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway at the Brickyard Crossing Resort.
Restaurants: Indianapolis Fuel up for the day on French toast at the retro Fountain Diner. Hoist a cold one at the Alley Cat Lounge, a throwback dive in the Broad Ripple district. Order the pulled-pork nachos at the Creation Cafe at Buggs Temple, a renovated church with a patio that overlooks the Central Canal Walk. Dine on smoked baby-back ribs at Dawson’s on Main. Dig into fried chicken and mashed potatoes just like Grandma’s at Hollyhock Hill in the northside neighborhood.
Cultural/Historic: Indianapolis The mile-and-a-half Central Canal Walk serves as the centerpiece to the 250-acre White River State Park, also home to the Indianapolis Zoo. As you float down the water, check out the downtown sites: the asymmetrical glass atrium of the Indiana State Museum; the solemn USS Indianapolis National Memorial; and outdoor sculpture at the acclaimed Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art. Peek into the race car that Ray Harroun drove to win the first Indy 500 in 1911 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum. With 433,500 square feet and five levels of exhibition space, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis can boast that it is the largest such museum in the world. There, you’ll find North America’s largest water clock; a 1890s-vintage railway depot with a 35-foot-long Reuben Wells locomotive engine; a 19th-century carousel; antique dollhouses; the 43-foot Fireworks of Glass modern sculpture by Dale Chihuly, the artist’s largest permanent installation anywhere in the world; and a mastodon skeleton recovered from the nearby town of Greenfield, Indiana. Meet the city’s seven Atlantic bottlenose dolphins at the Indianapolis Zoo.
Fun Stuff: Indianapolis Try the 40-foot-tall water slides at Caribbean Cove, the state’s biggest indoor water park, located inside the Holiday Inn North. Take in a game on the grass at retro-themed Victory Field at the southeast end of White River State Park. Home to the Indianapolis Indians, the stadium was named the best minor-league ballpark in the country by Sports Illustrated. Give duckpin bowling—a national craze popular in the ’20s and ’30s—a try at the Action Duckpin Bowl, located in the Fountain Square district a few minutes southeast of downtown. As in conventional bowling, duckpin bowling uses 10 frames per game, but you get three shots at the pins instead of two. So what’s the catch? You have to toss a 2-pound to 4-pound ball down a regular-sized bowling lane to hit 10 shortish pins. |
