Hotels: Miami

Miami’s new Viceroy Hotel calls its couple’s package Amor, Amore, Amour, but the name Comida, Cibo, Cuisine would fit even better. The experience is all about the food.

True, you get two nights in a Kelly Wearstler–designed guest room, a blend of modern, Asian, and Louis XVI elements in jewel tones. You can swim laps at the largest rooftop pool in America, stretching 300 feet on the 15th-floor deck overlooking Brickell Key and Biscayne Bay. But why linger? Dinner at Eos awaits.

The $678 package includes a four-course tasting menu dreamed up by Michelin-starred chef Michael Psilakis. A tangy corn soup precedes a choice of three types of sashimi. Then come pasta selections like egg and truffle tagliatelle, and lobster and sea urchin risotto. I don’t have a proper blade to cut my grilled flatiron steak, but a butter knife cuts through the dish, well, like butter. A hazelnut and rum raisin leche frita caps off the meal.

The Viceroy knows you’re hungry for more, so return to Eos for breakfast. Try the Southern Farm House Breakfast, a sizzling skillet of eggs, grits, bacon, gruyere, garlic, and roasted tomato. If that seems too caloric, tell yourself that it’s really phase two of the South Beach diet.

Just save space for the champagne and chocolate-dipped strawberries back in your room. Maybe Amor, Amore, Amour is right: The way to the heart is through the stomach.

NB: Sleep off one too many South Beach cocktails in luxury at the new Gansevoort South.

Fun Stuff: Miami

South Beach cocktails tend toward the frozen, the syrupy, and the gargantuan—everything award-winning mixologist John Lermayer hates. “It’s hard to find a good drink around here,” says the head barkeep of the Florida Room at the Delano Miami hotel. “But it’s not impossible.”

To prove his point, Lermayer takes me on a “cocktail safari” of South Beach. Our first stop is the 8 Oz. Burger Bar (305-397-8246) for a Perfect Storm, Paul Sevigney’s take on the classic Dark and Stormy. “See the clarity?” says Lermayer. Clear it is, and with a kick too—because Sevigney uses ginger beer instead of ginger ale.

Millions of thirsty Brazilians make cachaça the No. 3 spirit in the world, but Sunset Lounge in the Mondrian Hotel is the only cachaça bar in America. Mixologist Michael Flannery adds passion fruit and sriracha spice to Cabana Cachaça, sugar, and crushed limes to create his Chilli Passion Caipirinha. The combination renders Lermayer speechless. After taking a sip, he only widens his eyes in appreciation.

Our last stop seems like the most unlikely place to find a standout cocktail: an Irish bar. But Laura Cullen at Clarke’s puts beer in her Guinness Flip. “Laura made the Flip work for an Irish place,” says Lermayer, savoring his frothy egg cocktail. “Using Guinness, using Baileys, using Bushmills. It’s genius.”

NB: Nurse a pair of John Lermayer’s signature cocktails—the Jackie Rose and the Beach Bison—at the Florida Room. And swap the strong stuff for a cheap beer at Mac’s Club Deuce on South Beach. (305) 531-6200
